The borough is named after Trainer's Island, which was named for the family of William Trainer, who settled there in the late 17th century.

Trainer is located at 39°49′35″N 75°21′35″W, at an elevation of 15 feet (4.6 m). It is bordered to the north by the borough of Marcus Hook, to the east by the Delaware River, to the south by the borough of Chester, and to the west by the borough of Upland. Trainer is located in the Delaware Valley, about 7 miles (11 km) southwest of the city of Chester and about 8 miles (13 km) southeast of the city of Philadelphia.
