Surprise is a city in Maricopa County, Arizona, United States. The population was 30,848 at the 2010 census; however, rapid expansion has boosted the city's population to 117,517 at the 2018 census estimates, an increase of 281.2%. As such, it is the second fastest-expanding municipality in the greater Phoenix metropolitan area (after Gilbert) and, between 1990 and 2000, it was the sixth fastest-expanding place among all cities and towns in Arizona.

Surprise is relatively close to Phoenix, being about a 30-minute drive away. It is located at the northwestern edge of the Phoenix metropolitan area. It is a bedroom community, with most of its residents commuting to work elsewhere in the metro area. The city has a relatively young population, with a median age of 33.2.
