Surprise is a city in Maricopa County, Arizona, United States. The population was 30,848 at the 2010 census; however, rapid expansion has boosted the city's population to 117,517 at the 2018 census estimates, an increase of 281.2%. As such, it is the second fastest-expanding municipality in the greater Phoenix metropolitan area (after Gilbert) and, between 1990 and 2000, it was the sixth fastest-expanding place among all cities and towns in Arizona.

Surprise is relatively close to Phoenix, being about a 30-minute drive away. It is located at the northwestern edge of the Phoenix metropolitan area. It is a bedroom community, with most of its residents commuting to work elsewhere in the metro area. The city has a relatively young population, with a median age of 33.2.

Surprise is home to several attractions, including the Surprise Stadium, which is home to the Texas Rangers and Kansas City Royals for spring training. The Surprise Recreation Campus is also a popular destination, featuring a lake, walking trails, tennis and volleyball courts, and a skate park. The city also hosts several annual events, such as the Surprise Fiesta Grande, the Surprise Fine Arts and Crafts Festival, and the Surprise Fall Festival.

Surprise is served by two major highways, Loop 303 and Grand Avenue. The Loop 303 connects the city to the rest of the Phoenix metropolitan area, while Grand Avenue connects it to the nearby cities of Peoria and Wickenburg. The city is also served by the Valley Metro bus system, which provides transportation to downtown Phoenix and other nearby cities.
