Looking at the vast Atlantic Ocean we find the city of Lisbon, capital of Portugal and a city that has succeeded combining past and present with good taste. Neighbourhoods full of monuments, a privileged landscape and portuguese culture make Lisbon a perfect destination to enjoy a good break.
One of the first things you should know about the city of Lisbon is its long history, back in the eighth century, the Phoenicians settled on the Tagus River and it was them who gave the city the name of Ulissipo (which after several linguistic mutations became Lisbon). Every influential nation was attracted by the wealth of the region and the advantageous strategic position both military and merchant, from the Greeks to Napoleon ... its history is the succession of conquests.
With the succession of so many cultures we can find a lot of interesting monuments spread along its neighbourhoods .
No doubt one of the sites you should start visiting is Belém neighborhood in which you will find what is perhaps the most beautiful and representative monument of Lisbon: Belém Tower, a sturdy tower erected to protect the entrance to the River Tagus and that stands out for the beauty with which it is decorated .
Following our tour of Lisbon we recommend you to visit the castle of St. George. Located on the highest hill, it gives the city a distinctive shape. It was built in the fifth century by the Visigoths and today it has eleven walled watchtowers, an armory and a museum. From the castle you will see one of the most beautiful panoramic views of the city.
But if you really want to drink in the spirit of Lisbon the best you can do is to get on the tram, then you will tour the picturesque streets of the city and admire the monuments on the way.
What better way to say goodbye to the city through the biggest bridge in Europe? We refer of course to the Vasco da Gama bridge , which was erected in 1998 in honour of the explorer who 500 years before had arrived in India. During the 17.2 km bridge you can enjoy the beautiful views of the Tagus River in the Atlantic Ocean, a spectacle at sunset.
Lisbon is a charming city, full of art and culture, in which to enjoy so much in mixing up with its people, a more than recommended place to broaden our horizons.
