The Dominican Republic is one of the favorite tourist destinations for couples who want a place to relax on beautiful beaches and hotels all at once. But there is always time and desire to make a trip to the nation's capital, Santo Domingo, especially to enjoy a change of scene that allows us to vary the stay.
It is a city by the sea of 4 million people that will quickly surprise us with its frenetic and lively pace. It is here where we can not only satisfy our need to buy some souvenirs to take home but also to have greater contact with the historical past of the nation. However, since we normally reserve just one day for this visit, we should really know where to go. What areas are a must?
The first stop is the colonial city, as it is the original heart of the Spanish colonization, where the original settlement was established, which was under the command of Diego Columbus, brother of the navigator who discovered the islands. Highlights of our stop will be the Alcázar de Colón, Parque Colón, Calle del Conde, commercial heart of this historic district, Calle de las Damas, nerve center of the place and the Cathedral of America if we want to know some religious monument, it holds the honor of being the first church on the continent.
The next area that we recommend is the Malecón, a promenade running along the entire city at the seaside. Although everyone calls it 'Malecón' it is actually George Washington Avenue and the most luxurious hotels in the capital are settled there. We should stop at the obelisk of Santo Domingo and it is also a good idea to have a drink or dinner at one of the restaurants of this area.
Of course we can not forget other places of interest that we can visit if we have some spare time and not so much fatigue. We recommend to visit Mercado Modelo where we can buy some souvenirs at a good price (after haggling) and Duarte Avenue, which has been called Chinatown, because the largest Chinese colony of the country is settled there.
In short, although we will go to Dominican Republic to enjoy its beaches, we should always reserve a day to delight walking through a city that will not leave us indifferent and that will help us to appreciate the dominican personality and their way of understanding life.
